A Tiny Haven

A few images of my work in the Designers/Makers pop-up shop at Exmouth market which took place in the lead up to Christmas. An empty, characterless shop was transformed into a tiny haven bursting with creative goodness and UK designed delights.

Hello January

Illustration by me, inspired by my kitten Daphne

So far January has welcomed us with rather wet and windy arms. The sky is indigo and the rain has been frequent, washing clean the pavement and, in turn, washing the slate clean as people's minds turn to new year's resolutions and self improvement.

Personally, I’m not one for making new year's resolutions (mostly because I’ve always given up on them by mid February!) but I think it’s healthy and good practice to reflect on the past year and take time to consider positive changes or goals for the new.

One thing I particularly enjoyed and felt was beneficial to both my business and myself in 2011 were the various events at which I sold my work during the lead up to Christmas. Not only did I make a huge amount of sales (far more than I expected!) but I also made a lot of useful contacts and, as a bonus, I met some truly lovely and inspiring people along the way.

I’ll share with you a little story about one of my customers that I found rather surprising and encouraging. He saw someone with my Tipsy Badger Tote Bag on the tube and knew his girlfriend should have it as she attends a university in America where the mascot is a badger. Somehow he managed to track me down and had me send it to her with a sweet little note ready for her trip to Europe. I love the fact that my design has touched someone’s life in such a special and thoughtful way, at the end of the day that’s what its all about.

With the new year now here I have reminded myself of some of my working practices and goals that I need to keep in mind- aiming high, staying motivated and making the most of every opportunity. This year I will also be pushing myself further with my work and trying things that previously felt a little out of my reach or comfort zone.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on changes you will be making for 2012 and, most of all, I want to wish you a very happy new year. I hope it is full of wonderfully new and exciting experiences!
